Recent Projects

We feature four recent SharePoint projects highlighting BC's focus on utilising SharePoint to solve complex requirements in collaboration, integration, document management and business workflows.

Ballard Chalmers are focused on delivering solutions to complex business process integration and collaboration requirements utilising the Microsoft enterprise server architecture of .NET framework, SharePoint Server, SQL Server and BizTalk sever. The following are a few recent brief examples of our client engagements:

ASLEC

The Association of Signals, Lighting and other Highway Electrical Contractors is a trade body formed in 1952 and today has over 80 member organisations. SharePoint is used to track various documents and information related to the association. Ballard Chalmers was originally appointed to carry out a major restructuring of an earlier site.

This involved developing custom software to rearrange site collections, sites, libraries and data into the new structure. Later development work has involved creating custom reports that aggregate and present data from the system. Ballard Chalmers also provides a general SharePoint support service for ASLEC.

CeresPower

Is a world leading provider of fuel cell technology for use in small scale combined heat and power products for the residential sector and in energy security applications. CeresPower has high-tech research and production facilities and has a high-tech technical infrastructure to go with it.

SharePoint forms a central part of the company strategy for document management and exchange, issue tracking and collaboration. Ballard Chalmers have been appointed to provide general SharePoint support to the IT team and have developed a number of custom features to improve the SharePoint offering including:

• Tracking document versions and in particular to track the versions of the templates that documents are based on
• Selecting and aggregating data from multiple issue lists throughout the site and to display the results in tabular and chart format

Frontier Silicon

Is the world's leading supplier of innovative semiconductor, module and software solutions for digital radio and connected audio systems and has offices throughout the world including London, Cambridge, Hong Kong, Japan and the US. SharePoint is used as a document management and collaboration tool throughout the organisation.

Ballard Chalmers have carried out a number of custom features to extend Frontiers SharePoint solution to better meet the requirements of its users. These include:

• A feature to automatically copy the top level menu from the main site collection onto all other site collections. This enables Frontier maintain a common menu structure even though they have multiple site collections
• A feature to automatically refresh all dynamic fields in a Word document when it is checked in to a SharePoint library. This ensures that the table of contents, date and other fields are all current for each check in without the user having to remember to update all the fields in Word

Vodafone

Vodafone is one of the world's largest mobile phone network providers and has a massive IT infrastructure. Vodafone DE, the German division of Vodafone, makes use of many different server systems, including Windows and SharePoint, and has strict policy management procedures for new and existing systems.

For each type of system a series of detailed configuration best practice rules are drawn up, these are then loaded into the configuration management software that continually monitors for any violations. Determining the best practice rules requires detailed knowledge of each server product and Ballard Chalmers were appointed to work with Vodafone DE to establish and publish the best practice rule set for all SharePoint Deployments across the business.
